Oxidation and corrosion were an ongoing problem with steel at the turn of the 19th century. This tough but flawed metal was limited in its use in structures and tools due to its natural tendency to rust. The breakthrough transformation of steel took place in 1913 in Sheffield, England, when metallurgist, Harry Brearly, working on a project to improve rifle barrels, accidentally discovered that adding chromium to low carbon steel provided stain resistance. Later it was discovered that a combination of 18% chromium combined with 8% nickel provided the look and performance for what is today referred to as stainless steel. With this discover, Mr. Brearly set about to apply the new process to the creation of fine cutlery. 18/8 came to be known as the foundation of all varieties of stainless steel and created a revolution in industrial production and consumer products. What was ordinary…became extraordinary.
